Coupon Tip: How to Handle Coupon Rejection

by Heather on January 27, 2011 10:30 am

What do you do if the cashier won’t take your coupon? I thought I would share how I handle this situation, as it does occur occasionally for me since I use a lot of coupons. An important thing to remember is to always be polite. Cashiers are usually just trying to follow their store’s coupon redemption policy, and sometimes lack the necessary training to do this successfully. Cashiers are also trying to spot fraudulent coupons, something you should be doing as well so you never have any in your coupon file.

Steps to Take When Your Coupon is Rejected:
1. Ask why the coupon you are trying to use can not be used, what is the store’s specific policy? (see my list of Store Coupon Acceptance Policies)
2. Speak to the Manager if you are not satisfied with the cashier’s response to your questions.
3. If you are told you can not use the coupon because your purchase does not qualify for it’s use, ask for the coupon back and do not buy the product at that store (unless you need it right then).
4. Contact the Corporate Office if you are unsatisfied with the response you received when questioning the store’s policy on coupon redemption (I have never done this, but have heard of other people doing so).

What if the Manager says “You have too many coupons”
This actually happened to me once at Walgreens, where I was buying a lot of items and had a manufacturer’s coupon for most of them plus a Walgreens coupon to stack on top of those manufacturer’s coupon. Of course I got a little frustrated by the comment “You have too many coupons”, but I remained polite and asked for the Manager (who was assisting the cashier) to tell me which coupons I could not use and to give me those coupons back and remove those items from my transaction. When it came down to it, the Manager did accept most of my coupons, giving me two back simply because they wouldn’t scan and he didn’t want to override them.

Remember that . . .
* The store has the right to reject your coupons for any reason, and to change their store policy at any time. Of course, you are free to file a complaint with the Manager or Corporate Office.
* Most stores want to provide excellent customer service, and I find that most Managers will happily accept the legitimate coupons that the cashiers didn’t want to accept (when the cashier couldn’t give me a good reason why they wouldn’t accept them).
* You have the option to shop at a different store if you do not like a store’s policy on accepting coupons!

Those are my tips, now let’s hear yours! I know it’s easy to rant about your experiences, but what I’d love to hear is your advice on how to handle the situation.

not really a what do I do if they don’t take my coupon thing.. but a helpful hint. When using a bunch of coupons in one transaction, give the cashier one coupon at a time, this ensures that all you coupons get scanned and the cashier doesn’t feel as over whelmed.

I had written in to Nexxus about a shampoo that left my hair very oily. I “complained” and they sent me a coupon for a $15.00 bottle of another formula and even suggested the one for my hair problem. Well The bottle exceeded the coupon by 94 cents. The cashier at once said with a very cocky attitude…”I DON’T THINK SO” To which I promptly asked what he meant by that remark. He said this is a fake and we will not take it because no coupons are worth that and be legal. I told him I wanted to talk to the supervisor. He came right over and the cashier told him it was a fake coupon. I told the supervisor that I got it directly from the manufacturer and why I got it. The supervisor gave me no problem at all and said to use it. The cashier then asked how I got such a high dollar coupon. I just expalind it was a high dollar item and if a person knows how to bitch, they can get lots of good coupons. LOL That was the end of his questions.

Maria – Thanks for sharing your “coupon rejection” story

I have a question for you kaitlyn because I have had a problem at walgreens myself with stacking coupons and I just wanted to know if this happens to you too. Stacking coupons, walgreens coupon with a manufacture coupon on one item being rejected. Cashier tells me I cant do this because I only have 1 item and not 2 items. So the computer will reject one coupons so i end up missing out on a good deal. I hhate that this happens to me and was wondering if this happens to you aswell.

I have only tried to stack a couple of times (in fear of the problems with them in the past) however the times that I did that was the only thing I didn’t have a problem with. Have you tried other Walgreens to see if its just the one you’re going to? It’s unfortunate that their coupon policy keeps you guessing…

I am a cashier at Walmart. I do not like to turn away coupons, but sometimes I have to. Most of the time it is because the product is save so much when you buy so many and the person does not have the quantity amount. However, I will say that Walmart is the easiest place I have known to redeem coupons on products. I had a lady come with so many coupons on a product that was cheaper than the coupon itself, and I didnt think it was fair, but we had to take the coupons and we ended up owing her money and she got other things as well. It was for a church so I was not upset by anymeans. I was just astounded that we have to take the coupon. It was 5 dollars off a product and the product was on rollback for $3.50. She had a coupon for each one, and bought around 50 of that product!

I have to say that couponing is not stealing money. The store does not lose money at all. The manufacture’s coupon is reimbursed to the store. So in all actuality the manufacturer is promoting their product with the use of coupons in the efforts of increasing their sales.

Have you ever tried using the printable coupons at Walmart. They scan through our systems at my Walmart that I am a cashier at and we take them constantly.

sabrina. There a lot of people who do not like to use the self checkouts, especially when they  have coupons. Sometimes the coupons do not scan through and they become frustrated.  However, most of our employees at the Walmart I work at are very friendly. As a Walmart cashier, my favorite register to work at is the self checkouts. This is because I get to maintain four registers plus mine at the same time and I appreciate that people are trying to be independant and in a hurry. I personally prefer to use the self checks myself.

  • Krazybabe77782

maggie. Some walmarts have shut down the self checkouts because of the number of thefts that happen on these registers. There are many people who will try to slip in extra items when scanning their things. I have seen this first hand. This lady was buying a whole bunch of stuff and was putting in two packages of meats into her bags with every one she scanned in order to trick the weight. We caught this and she ended up going to jail for stealing over 100 dollars worth of items. Some walmarts do not have employees who can pay attention to multiple registers at one time and catch these thefts. When this is the issue, they begin to contemplate shutting down the self checkouts.

  • Krazybabe77782

Some cashiers appreciate this, but I prefer to scan all of the coupons at the end of the transaction. The only ones that I prefer to have given one at a time are the buy one get one free items. We have to manually enter the price and searching for the product is time consuming for both the customer and me. I try to provide fast and friendly service to each customer. The way I do it is the fastest way for me as a cashier.

  • Krazybabe77782

I appreciate my customers who do this. Not only does it make their time waiting less, but it helps me to keep up a pace with my work in order to keep big lines from forming.

  • Krazybabe877782

Well in situations like this, it is best to maintain a polite composure. As a cashier at Walmart I try to keep an eye out for registers that are going to be quicker when I know my transaction will take a while. When this happens, I will suggest that register to them so that way my current customer does not feel like a burden or feel rushed. If it weren’t for our customers we would not have jobs!

  • Krazybabe77782

I have never had asoft drink cap come through so I would not know how to handle that situation, but this is very true. Walmart policy does state that these coupons are accepted. If that Walmart says otherwise, the Corporate office will correct this.

  • Amy2005

    Val,
I understand your situation- yes, Walgreens requires coupons to equal number of items.  And like you said, that does include Walgreens Q’s.  What I do is get the cheapest item possible, like a mini highlighter or candy bar!
