Amazon Mom: 30% Discounts, Free Amazon Prime (up to 1yr), Refund for Current Prime Members (I’m getting $46 back)
It’s free to join Amazon Mom and everyone is eligible (you don’t have to be a mom). It’s very quick to sign-up, and it’s optional to give them any information about the children you buy things for.
Here are the benefits of joining – again it’s totally free to sign-up:
- 30% off select diapers and wipes: normally you get 15% when you subscribe & save, but Amazon Moms get an extra 15% discount for a total of 30% off!
- Free Amazon Prime Membership for 3 months: that means you get free 2-day shipping for 3 months on thousands of items – if you buy $25 or more from the Baby Store (in a single order) you get an extra free month of Amazon Prime, up to one free year (but everyone gets the free 3 months without buying anything from the Baby Store)
- Refund for Current Amazon Prime Members: if you are already an Amazon Prime member, go ahead and cancel to get a refund and at least 3 months free of Amazon Prime. You bet I jumped on this offer because it means I get a refund of $46.61 and between 3 months to 1 year of free Amazon Prime (depending on my shopping in the Baby Store, I’m sure I’ll buy a few gifts there this year). I received my refund email the morning after I joined Amazon Mom. Be sure you join Amazon Mom and cancel when they ask you if you want to cancel.
I know it’s hard to believe Amazon is offering such a great deal, please read the Amazon Mom Help Page & FAQ for more information. Thanks goes to Swag Grabber for sharing! Remember that students get a Free Amazon Prime Membership too!

Catalog Choice Works to Reduce Junk Mail
I continue to be impressed by Catalog Choice, a free service to easily stop the catalogs you don’t want from appearing in your mailbox. It saves you time by being able to request that you be removed from several mailing lists all in one place. Most of the catalogs I’ve entered at Catalog Choice are no longer appearing in my mailbox (many catalogs I at one time wanted to receive, some are true junk mail that I didn’t specifically sign-up for). The great thing about Catalog Choice is that if you continue to receive a catalog after “opting-out” you can report that you are still receiving it and they do the follow-up for you. It’s a great way to save time by letting them contact the companies for you, and a great way to reduce the number of catalogs you get in your mailbox.
If you are using Catalog Choice, leave a comment and tell us what you think about it? If you are using a different free service to reduce junk mail, let us know about it! What other things are you doing to reduce the amount of junk mail you get?

Half-Off Vitamin Buying Strategy
If you buy Nature’s Bounty or Nature Made vitamins at the grocery store or drug store, be sure to try this vitamin-buying strategy to save more than 50% on every bottle you buy.
Gather coupons. The best source of coupons is the Sunday ad insert. But you can also print coupons and coupons will come with your free samples. You’ll also find vitamin coupons in the blinkie machines in the grocery store aisles, and printing out as Catalina coupons at the register. Sometimes you’ll even find them inside the packaging, so keep your eyes peeled!
Only buy vitamins when they are on sale for “Buy One Get One Free”. These sales happen on a regular basis at several stores (Kroger and CVS in my area) and the best way to find out when they happen is to read the weekly store sales flier. Also look for vitamins on clearance, but be sure to check the expiration dates. I typically see vitamins that are clearanced out because of a change in packaging and they are nowhere near their expiration date. You can still use manufacturer’s coupons on those clearance vitamins.
When you buy two bottles, use two manufacturer’s coupons. You can use one coupon for each product purchased regardless of what the store’s sale promotion is. That’s because the manufacturer is giving you the coupon savings, and the store is giving you the sale price savings.
Join the Nature’s Bounty Healthy Rewards and the Nature Made Wellness Rewards programs so that you earn points for every bottle of vitamins purchased. Those points add up fast and will gain you money-saving coupons to use on future purchases. These are higher value coupons (think almost a free bottle) than you can get from any other source. Just remember to log in and enter your codes to earn your rewards. You can earn a $7 coupon from Nature Made with 500 points.
Save your coupons until there is a “Buy One Get One Free” sale. When you get that high-value coupon by redeeming your rewards points, hold onto it until there is a “Buy One Get One Free” sale and keep increasing your savings on your vitamin purchases.

If you are buying other brands of vitamins you can still save money by timing your purchases to take advantage of sales and coupons at the same time to double-up on your savings.
What does “Do Not Double” mean?
You’ve seen it on your coupons “Do Not Double or Triple” in ominous bold print. What does this mean? I’ll share my opinion and experience with you, and then you share yours by leaving a comment.
The computers at most grocery stores that double or triple coupons will still double or triple that coupon (despite the wording). The store gives you that extra savings – it does not come from the manufacturer. So I’m comfortable taking that extra savings that the store is giving me when that store has a doubling or tripling coupon policy in-place.
To be honest with you, if you asked a cashier to not double that coupon – they probably wouldn’t even know how because like I said it’s an automatic thing that the computer does on it’s own! I’ve never had an experience where a cashier has voided the doubling of a coupon because it said “do not double” on it.
My big concern with coupons is to avoid printing or using fraudulent coupons because if you try to use those it’s illegal and the store will not be able to get any money for the coupon from the manufacturer. Please educate yourself about fraudulent coupons so you can avoid them. It really does hurt everyone when fraudulent coupons are used!

Your turn – what does it mean when you see “do not double or triple” on a coupon and what are your cashiers doing about it?

Frugal Haircuts
Kimberly asked me “Do you know where I can get a good deal on a hair cut?”
My Answer: Frugal Haircuts
My first thought was to check with your local beauty school, because they need people to practice on and often offer haircuts and coloring for FREE (or at least deeply discounted). I later found out if you have a Toni & Guy salon near you, you can be a hair model on Tuesday night and get a free haircut during their weekly training night. I just signed-up to be a hair model!
If there isn’t a hair salon near you where you can get a free haircut, then check the advertised specials and coupons in your area. Many salons offer discounts on particular days, like half-price cuts one day a week. My personal strategy is not one I recommend – I simply go for a long, long time without getting a haircut because I have a hard time finding the time to go by myself to get one. It helps that I have a simple straight cut with no bangs, so I can just let it grow and grow until it starts driving me crazy – then I will make the time to get a haircut.
Do-it-yourself haircuts are FREE after you have the tools you need. I’m not adventurous enough for this approach with my family’s hair – but I know that some families do all their haircuts at home for FREE. Think of it as a hobby and work on developing your skills on simple haircuts. I used to work with a couple (same age as me) that cut each others hair to save money. Would you let your husband cut your hair? I know, it would take a lot of trust (and a simple style) but wouldn’t it be a great way to get a free haircut?

Haircuts for a Good Cause
Katie said “at Hair Cuttery from now until August 15th for every child haircut (under age 18) that they give in the store- the Hair Cuttery will donate one free haircut to children in need in the community you live in. So, if haircuts are on your back to school list- here’s your chance to help!”
Locks of Love is a fabulous way to donate your hair to someone who needs it. If you have at least 10 inches of hair to cut off, you can donate your hair and they will make real hair wigs for children who have lost their hair and are financially disadvantaged. Some hair salons offer a discount or even a free haircut if you are donating your hair. Amy’s daughter recently donated her hair to this great cause. Jessica took both of her daughters to Great Clips (posts here and here) to donate their hair and they got free haircuts!
Pantene Beautiful Lengths is another way to donate your hair, this time to women who have lost their hair due to cancer. You only need 8 inches of hair to cut off. Thanks goes to Zoey’s Mom for the reminder about this program!
