Diaper cakes are a fun and beautiful way to present the practical gift of diapers to an expecting or new mom. I made this diaper cake for under $10. Inspired by Amy’s diaper cake that I shared with you during Craft Week here, I wanted to make my own as a gift for my friend Lisa and her new baby boy. It was definitely easier to make than I thought, and I was able to gather all of the supplies I needed for just under $10. I found that the key to making a diaper cake is to have several different sizes of rubber bands. My diaper cake came out a bit uneven looking because I didn’t have the large rubber bands I needed – I also made the mistake of using brightly colored rubber bands which are just harder to hide with the ribbon.How did I make this diaper cake for under $10? I took advantage of the Huggies diaper deal at Kroger to buy two packages of newborn diapers. I picked up the ribbon at Walmart. I used free baby samples I had collected to hide as small gifts inside the diaper cake. I wrapped up an old memo board to use as a base. I used craft supplies I had on hand to make a gift tag. I have recently started my own business of making diaper cakes. I call it Cheeky Baby Cakes… get it?? Anyhow, I absolutely love it!! I get compliments all the time on my cakes! I love making diaper cakes for my friends, and the host of the showers if they know that I make them pay for all the supplies and its the table center piece. A tip in stead of rubber bands is cake pans! I have a ton of cake pans in all different sizes and the spring loaded ones are the best and then I just use some floral wire and wrap it around and it always works out great! :)
I have been making diaper cakes for about 2 years now and have made about 1/2 a dozen. I try to keep mine to under $20 and always get rave reviews for them. I usually buy Luvs diapers because I love them and they are pretty cheap at my wal-mart ($8). I also get the travel size johnson-johnson pack ($3), take n toss forks/spoon pack ($1), wash cloths ($1), rubber duck ($1) for the top, teething ring ($2), toy keys ($1). I also toss in what freebies I have hanging around. Having a toddler now that has outgrown a lot I have been using the Gerber puffs in the center as a core since I have a bunch stocked up and he doesn’t eat them. I have many ideas and would love to share pictures but don’t know how to/if we can post.
