Baby Cheapskate has a great list of 10 Ways to Have Fun This Summer for $1 or Less. Definitely a good source of ideas to keep your kids and your bank account happy this summer!
And for my Houston readers, the much anticipated Nina Loca Summer Fun 2008 is scheduled to be published on Sunday, May 25! You will want to print this and keep one copy in your car and one copy at home, it’s a great guide to where kids eat free and what you can do in Houston for fun this summer.
My boys and I plan on taking advantage of our library’s story time this summer, what frugal activities will you be doing with your kids this summer? Please share by leaving a comment, remember that Anonymous comments are welcome too!
We have a zoo membership and we go there A LOT during the summer (we figured this up – it paid for itself after the first 2 visits). There’s also a Barnes & Noble just up the road that has story time TWICE a week! And if we really wanted to, with the amount of libraries here, we could go to story time every day! My oldest is part of our local baseball team’s kids group and they get in free on Sundays and we get a military discount (the youngest is still free). Hmmmm, trying to think what else we do….. oh yeah – we are members at the YMCA so my oldest is playing T-ball (for a very reasonable price) and the youngest is doing tumbling once a week.
we also do the Library REading Program, and our library has an awesome Summer Reading Kick-off Party with free food and games and prizes. We also have a weekly story time. We go to parks, have playdates with friends, go to my friend’s pool at her apt complex, we have a loal Children’s museum that is free on wed from 2-5pm. We do 2-3 VBS and other church day camps. Thsi year my daughter is going to a 3 day music camp for FREE! Yay. There’s tons of stuff to do, you just have to search. Our family also does a lot of camping which is fun and inexpensive.
We are members at the zoo. While it’s not FREE … it is worth the money when you add up all the visits over time.
We have 2 sessions of VBS at our church, 1 week of Pirate Camp at our church, 1 week of karate camp, weekly swimming lessons, and weekly movies at Harkins Summer Movie club. Today is my oldest last day of pre-school, and we start full swing in our activities on Tuesday. I still get my weekly Parents Day out day on Wednesdays too!
We’re going to participate in our library’s summer reading program as well as the one from Barnes and Noble. We also might catch a free kids movie at Regal Cinemas Family Film Festival or pay a buck and go see the ones at the local Cinemark theater. We’re also going on a road trip. It should prove interesting. We’re driving almost 2000 miles with a 7 yr. old who has always flown if we’re going long distances!
We join the local libraries summer reading club. The kids get prizes for reading a certain number of hours. Past prizes have included a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut, water bottles, tote bags, ice cream cones, and baseball tickets to see our local team “The Imtimadaters”. (yes it is Dale Earnhardt country around here lol) We also go to the “big mall” and see the dollar movies. Swimming lessons from the local Parks and Rec are very cheap and fun. My kids also LOVE the Farmers Market… even though we live on a farm.
Yah! Who would have thought I’d be so excited about a “kids eat free list” Oh man oh man… can’t wait. Thanks so much for the heads up.
