Readers ask me: “Do you make money blogging?”
I answer: “Yes, penny by penny I make money blogging.”
As my readership grows, so do the number of emails I get from new bloggers asking me for advice on how they can make money blogging. I encourage bloggers to start blogging about a topic they are passionate about and not expect to make any money at all. Advertising earns you money literally one penny at a time. Most bloggers earn less than a penny per visitor to their blog. The amount earned varies based on the types of ads you have on your blog.
When I started my blog last October, I never expected it to earn enough money to be able to treat it as my part-time job. Actually, I didn’t see my first penny in my hand until after blogging for four months. I soon realized that my blog had enough growth potential to become a part-time job for me and this allowed me to dedicate more time to it. My blog enables me to remain a full-time stay-at-home mom and I love the flexibility of being my own boss. It is not easy money for me and requires a large dedication of my time. I spend at least 4 hours a day during the week, and a few hours on the weekend. Blogging has replaced all of my hobbies because I simply do not have any extra time to spend on hobbies. My blog is my job and my hobby – but I love it!
I hope to be bringing you information about blogging and making money in this new series every Monday. Feel free to ask me any question about blogging as it relates to earning money and I will work on answering your questions each week.
Also, I visit quite frequently, so readers like me help a great deal!!
I have been telling all my friends about your site, not realizing that I was helping you make money, but glad you are! You are helping us all save money on products and freebies! Thanks so much, keep up the GREAT site!
how do you get paid by visit? I have a freebie blog also and I don’t get paid that way…..I’ve been blogging since March, but have been doing freebies for 8 years nowThanks!
Although I am not a mom (but I know one very well!) I still use coupons and I find your site an comments to be very helpful. We all need to find ways to save money these days and you are a big help. Please keep it up!
Lou asked “Do you get money when we click on an ad?”The answer is usually “No” because most of my ads are paid-per-view not paid-per-click. Some of my ads are influenced by the number of clicks (Google), but the number of visitors I get each day is the overriding factor in what I get paid. Please do not click on my ads just to be nice – only click on them if you are genuinely interested in finding out more about a product or service. I strive to provide ads that might be good resources for my readers. The best way to show your support of my blog, is to tell your friends about it and help me grow my readership. Here are some other ways you can support me. You can also actively participate by posting comments to help me improve my content. If you use printable coupons from Coupons.com, consider printing them through my affiliate links. Request your free samples and coupons by mail through me, sometimes I’m able to be an affiliate for these offers and that means I get paid for each person who signs-up through my affiliate link.I’ll stop there, just keep on reading and thanks so much for the questions!
Jessica – For the affiliate programs I recommend, see my answer to Gloria. For opportunities to review products, these come as your blog grows. Most of my product reviews are from Mom Central. They send out blog tour announcements and usually select bloggers to fill the tour based on who responds first. I’ll work on drafting a post just about MomCentral.com because I’ve had such a great experience with them!
Gloria – Look at the bottom left for my list of affiliate programs I recommend to other bloggers. Logical Media is my favorite for free samples and coupons. But I also use CPA Storm and IncentReward. Commission Junction is another program to look into because they offer some coupon ads. Coupons.com has been a great affiliate program to join! You can also be on the lookout for Savvy Source, but you need to get an invite from another blogger (I’ve seen people asking for and giving them out on Twitter).
Sandra – Typically I make money by people visiting my blog by opening up Freebies4Mom.com in their web browser. Most of the ads on my site pay per visit (rather than per click). But I love feed readers and please keep using your Google reader! I also belong to several affiliate programs which enable me to earn money by referring my readers to free samples and coupons. This is a very small percentage of the freebies I post because I am very particular about which offers I will post. I’m an affiliate for Coupons.com, so if you print coupons through my purple Quick Print box or a Coupons.com link then you are helping to support my blog. The best way you can support me is by reading my blog, participating in the discussions, and sharing it with your friends. With the help of my readers, my blog becomes better and that helps it grow to reach more moms and frugal-minded people.
Do you get money when we click on an ad? If so, I’ll click each time I visit (more than once daily!) Lou
Great post. I haven’t added Adsense yet. I am hoping to look more into affliates later, but mainly concentrating on doing paid reviews on my blog for several different companies. So far it’s bringing in a nice but small extra income. You have a great blog.
I also just started a blog and would like your ideas on what makes the most sense to add. I appreciate your series. I don’t expect to make a lot of money, definitely not enough to even call it a part time job, but a little would be nice! I don’t have any idea how to get started.Another question I had is about the blogs I’ve seen that review products and then are given some to give away (I think you do this too?). How do you get involved in that? That would be right up my alley!
Nice post! I just started my first blog last week. It is definitely something I am passionate about and I hope it’ll turn into something fantastic as well! Thanks for your great blog!Virignia
I love your blog and this topic is perfect timing for me since I just started my own blog about fun and frugal things. I just signed up for coupons.com. What other affiliate programs do you recommend?
I subscribe through Google reader, but you can answer about any of the feeds or email. I just want to make sure I’m doing what helps you most since it doesn’t matter to me how I read it!
Heather! I love your honesty and I look forward to reading your blog everyday!! By far my favorite among the “free, saving, fugal, advice blogs”! Thanks a bunch for your dedication!! Bryanna, Show Low, AZ
Sandra – Are you asking about the email subscription to the blog updates? If you can be more specific with your question, then I will be happy to answer it!
