The new member offer for Rakuten (formerly called Ebates) is: get $10 cashback for your first $25+ purchase from any retailer on their site. Here are a few reasons why some of my readers are not using Rakuten, a cash-back site, but why they should try it:
1. “I’m skeptical because it sounds too good to be true”
It’s true! Rakuten pays their members the cashback they’ve earned every three months and they are one of the original cash-back shopping sites.
2. “It’s not enough cashback to bother with”
Pennies add up, so while the cashback from one specific purchase may not be much – the cashback from ten purchases will add up fast!
3. “It’s too complicated”
It’s one extra step – you visit Rakuten.com before shopping online and find the store you want to shop at (almost every online store is there).
4. “I don’t use PayPal”
You don’t have to get your cashback via PayPal. Rakuten is happy to mail you a check every three months or give you American Express Membership Rewards points.
5. “I don’t shop online”
Get the Rakuten mobile app because you can earn cashback for in-store deals too!
If you love to earn cash back using Rakuten, I’d love to hear from you! Please leave a comment or email me.

I see nothing on Rakuten’s web site re: “Rakuten (formerly called Ebates) has a tremendous offer for new users: get $40 cashback for your first $40+ purchase from any retailer on their site.” There is a “Refer and Earn $40” on the home page, that’s the closest thing I can find to the deal you mention in your blog.
Let me look into it, Cindy – thanks for pointing this out to me!
I have an account with ebates and have yet to use it, every time I want to make a purchase online the items I want are never included in the departments that provide cash back. which makes this program useless to me, i wish they gave cash back for all departments
I prefer Mypoints because you can earn rewards by shopping, searching, AND surveys
