Monotonous tasks. Endless chores. We all do them every day. And sometimes I just want CLOSURE on them. I want to be able to say “I am FINISHED” (even though I may only be finished for a minute or two).
This is why when I have a sink full of dirty dishes and I’m unloading the clean dishes out of the dishwasher and I’ve got all of the clean dishes out of the dishwasher I then close the dishwasher only to reopen it a few seconds later to start adding the dirty dishes. (Yes, I know that was a run-on sentence but if I was talking to you it would also sound like a run-on sentence).
It doesn’t accomplish anything to complain about the monotonous tasks, but it feels great to celebrate a completed task! (and I really like to have CLEAN dishes)
So….I’ve got a burning question for you: Do you close the dishwasher when it’s completely unnecessary?
I had to create a new category for this post, because these are things I always write in my head (and not on my blog). If I have anything else like this to share with you, you’ll find it in my menu bar under Entertain -> Ramblings 4 Mom (I know, it’s so not like me to write a post with NO LINKS to any resources – I’ll try to throw some in there once in awhile). Did you enjoy reading this post?
A few things I couldn’t categorize…Ramblings 4 Mom
I enjoyed this post. Post more like it! :)
And I am in the camp with those who said it’s better when I close it cause then I won’t bruise my shin!
YES!!!! And I am VERY anal about the dishes. lol I have to hand wash everything in the sink before I put them in the dishwasher. I just see the dishwasher as a sanitizer and a means of getting anything off of a dish that I might have missed. There’s nothing more icky than seeing the inside of a dishwasher with gunk in it because people don’t rise the plates – and then they eat off of the items they pull out of the dishwasher. There’s also a certain way I like the dishwasher loaded, and I don’t like to run a load through until the dishwasher is full. Like I said, I am ANAL about clean dishes. LOL
I completely agree with you and I do the same thing. When I’m done with all the laundry for the day (cause it’s never really completely done in a house of 6) I leave the washer lid open to signify that nothing is in it and I’m done with it.
yes! but I also do it to keep my lurking child out of it.
I don’t think I have ever meet anyone that hasn’t…lol :) Just seems like the thing to do….
I enjoyed reading ur rambling and everyone elses comments. Its nice to know there are others out there. I close the dishwasher so much that my 2 y/o will close it for me even when Im not done loading it.
i think i close it without thinking. there is a cupboard that is blocked by the door that i frequently need to put dishes away. it does feel good to have it all done an unloaded even if you are just going to fill it up again :)
I don’t have a dishwasher but I do unnecessary things a lot. I always put the cap back on my bottles before I throw them away…like, if I finish the gallon of milk I will put the cap back on before i throw it in the trash. :)
Close the dishwasher, close the dryer, turn off the light in the closet and close each and every dresser drawer.
For some reason, my husband can put the silverware in the catch-it container but RARELY puts the dishes in (leaves them in the sink without cleaning them off….thinks it soaks off on it’s own? – that was the way he was raised). A compromise is that once the dishwasher is closed and locked for a cycle, he knows that the dishes are washed and HE is to unload the washer. Finally, after 25 years in this house, he is finding out exactly where things go, even though I do find a few things in strange places. When I had a frozen shoulder and couldn’t reach very high, he thought he was being helpful and put everything away!!! Got to love him…..a keeper after 27 years this coming Friday! :)
I enjoyed reading it, thank you :)
I always fill the dishwasher with dirty dishes, closing the door, our light will come on to tell me it is not closed for safety reason, I have a magnet that says dirty dishes on one side clean onthe other a friend made for me crotched it to make sure it would not nick the door..love my dishwasher and treat it well, scraping food off of the dishes, never rinse the stuff, waste of water, it works great, only run it when it is full..love it, taking good care of it so it will last a long long time..
I got into to the habit of closing it after my daughter tripped and banged her head on the open dishwasher, and required stitches.
I think it’s cute that you close the door only to reopen it immediately to start loading. Isn’t it funny how our minds work? I just start reloading immediately.
I enjoyed this one and chuckled several times. I can relate to your wanting closure and if I had a dishwasher, other than me, it would be closed often.
Yep, I”m guilty too. Just have to do it. :)
I’ve never known anyone to leave it open, that would be odd. If I saw one open I’d ask why lol
Oh yes, I can never stop myself from closing that darn door. Even when I mentally tell myself not to do it since I’m going to turn around and fill it back up again. I just can’t help myself!
We usually close it, but not always. Actually, my husband unloads the clean dishes and I load the dirty ones. I hate to unload clean dishes.
I always close it. And I rinse my dishes before I put them in there even though there is plenty of evidence out there that says I don’t need to and it’s more expensive. I just can’t help myself.
If I didn’t close it, my two year old would climb on the door, and then my ridiculously overpriced dishwasher would be broken.
Totally! Our 18 month old just wants to get in there, it’s funny!

It’s a HUGE pet peeve of mine when the DH doesn’t close the dishwasher door until it clicks. Mainly because the light then says “clean” but they are really dirty. And I think it wears out the hinges …and likewise as others have said, it’s a safety issue for the young ones. Thank you for helping me see I am not CRAZY ;) (at least not where the dishwasher door closure is concerned)!
When I was younger my mom used to leave the dishwasher open so everything could air dry, and my brother would come barreling through the kitchen and slam it shut as he passed. He didn’t even realize he was doing it, he just didn’t like it being open!
Yep I close it. Mostly to clear out the green done light that tells me the clean cycle is over. This way when it’s full of dirty dishes no one gets confused that its dirty!
I absolutely close the dishwasher when not necessary!!! My son pulls EVERYTHING out of the dishwasher (clean or dirty) so usually it gets closed and reopened immediately way too often!!!
I always close mine too, and yes I like randomness :-) it helps me feel like my brain isn’t the only one with 1,000 tracks.
Yes, door down results in gashed chins
I definitely always close the dishwasher if there are dirty dishes in there. If you let the yucky food dry on the dirty dishes, then they’re less likely to come out clean. I leave it open for a while after I’ve emptied the clean dishwasher to air it out, but definitely keep the door closed when dirty dishes are in.
I always close the dishwasher. Not only to feel finished, but also because I am a notorious klutz as well as the greater majority of my family so if I left it the tiniest bit down, someone(most likely myself) is going to get hurt!
Great point – it’s a safety issue too!
I know all too well about leaving the dishwasher door open and tripping over it. My shins have the bruises to prove it! Lol…
